From theory to practice: national approaches adopted in Namibia and Mozambique to improve the quality of health services

Every year, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week aims to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, and policymakers to stop the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

Over the next 10 years, the World Health Organization (WHO), its global partners and its Member States will be working tirelessly to help all people of the world to have access to health services. As per the mandate of World Health Assembly resolution WHA72.6 (May 2019): “Towards Zero Patient Harm in Health Care: Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030” (First Draft, August 2020) is now open for public consultation.

Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety. WHO will observe World Patient Safety Day on 17 September 2020 and launch a global campaign to emphasize the importance of health worker safety as a priority for patient safety.

Director Dr Ed Kelley, Quality Team Lead Dr Shams Syed, and Clinical Services and Systems Unit Lead Dr Teri Reynolds from the WHO Department of Integrated Health Services joined us for a discussion on how best to maintain essential health services during an outbreak.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Sara Albolino, Director at the Centre for patient safety of the Tuscany Region, and Chair of the WHO Collaborating Centre Collaborating Centre in Communication and Human Factor for Delivery of Safety and Quality Care, along with her colleagues. 

In August 2016 we recorded a webinar with  Dr Edward Kelley, PhD, Director, Department of Service Delivery and Safety, WHO; Prof Benedetta Allegranzi, MD, DTM&H, Coordinator, a.i. Infection Prevention and Control Global Unit, Department of Safety Delivery and Service, WHO; and Dr Shams B. Syed, Coordinator, Universal Health Coverage and Quality Unit, Department of Service Delivery and Safety, WHO.

In May 2019, WHO approved the resolution on Global Patient Safety Action on Patient Safety in the 73rd WHO Assembly (WHA). This resolution was developed under the strong leadership of Dr Tedros Adahanom Ghebreyesus WHO-DG; R.H. Jeremy Hunt, former Secretary of State for Health, UK; Sir Liam Donaldson, WHO Patient Safety Envoy; and many other passionate leaders through the previous Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety.

The International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) and the International Hospital Federation (IHF) attended the World Health Organization (WHO) Consultation on Global Patient Safety 2020-2030 in Geneva, Switzerland, from 24th - 26th February 2020.
