Patient Safety and Cinema: What the Silver Screen Can Teach Us - A Training Opportunity for Developing Empathy in Healthcare Professionals

ISQua's President, Prof Jeffrey Braithwaite, will lead a special workshop aimed at promoting the use of movies in advancing our understanding of safe, high-quality care.

 

Movies can be invaluable in the training of healthcare professionals to diffuse a patient safety culture and an empathic approach towards patients and families.

 

Through the projection and discussion of video clips, this workshop will investigate the role of movies and TV series in building a cultural stereotype of healthcare quality and safety issues in both public opinion and among clinicians and quality experts.

 

A spirited discussion with a panel and among audience participants will focus on understanding how movies reflect ‘reality’, how they manipulate it, and how this can be reflected in, for example, medical error.

 

What we see in movies is often different to what we encounter in the real world of care – but nevertheless, movies can be so illuminating for us.
