In January 2026, ISQua Education provided 10 Fellowship Scholarships internationally, to provide full ISQua Membership and access to the full suite of courses on the Fellowship Programme to a select group of users from Lower Middle-Income Countries and Lower Income Countries.
Having completed two of the courses on the Fellowship and received his Fellowship Certificate, scholar Adegboyega Oderinde from Lagos, Nigeria, describes his education and experience as an ISQua Fellow to date.
ISQua Fellowship Experience
I’m Adegboyega Oderinde, a multiple-award-winning General Medical Practitioner with more than two decades of experience. I’m presently a Chief Medical Officer. I lead the Infection Prevention and Control, Quality Improvement and Medical Outreach teams. I also coordinate the Inter-Clinical Professionals’ forum and the HIV Clinic. In addition, I’m a member of the Hospital Monitoring Round Team.
As a Fellow of the Institute of Strategic Management (Chartered) of Nigeria, I’ve been extensively trained on ‘’where to go’’ but NOT ‘’how to get there’’. I believe that being a Fellow of ISQua provides the roadmap on ‘’how to get there’’. Hence, my award of the ISQua Fellowship is complementary, tailor-made, and a perfect contemporary fit.
This Fellowship is currently benefiting my career: I’ve been getting invitations (post-FISQua award) as a Speaker at Quality Improvement and Safety meetings. It has also empowered me to initiate the transformation of my facility’s standard of care from being solely system performance-based, but to include its twin: Human wellbeing. It is also helping to gradually shift the culture of individual castigation to system redesign (I know this will take some time to be really effective). My projection that training me is training the trainer of trainers has unfolded with lightning speed before my very eyes. The official recognition I’m enjoying is amazing!
Initially, I misrepresented Human Factors as Human error! As I went deeper into the course, I discovered the fact. The Human Factors course provided me with an in-depth understanding of the complex interaction between people, technology, tasks, and my resource-constrained environment as it relates to the Safety, Quality of care, and Staff wellbeing in the Hospital where I work.
The Sustainability course really highlighted potential strategies for developing SDGs locally. Solar as a renewable energy source resonates deeply with my setting: a nation that’s beset by recurrent non-availability of gas for power generation, frequent collapse of the national grid affecting transmission, compounded by epileptic distribution! Solar’s renewability components such as: being naturally replenished, clean & sustainable, and abundant availability makes it perfect for us. Preparations are at an advanced stage for solar installation in my facility. The plan is to start with high-power demanding areas.
Potentially, I would be interested in studying ‘’Measurements and Evaluation’’ because I’m attracted to accreditation and regulatory inspections. Then, ‘’Quality and Safety in resource-challenged countries’’ because of the peculiar setting I work in Lagos, Nigeria.
Thank you.
