Lucian Leape Patient Safety Fellowship

Build the skills and the confidence to lead safer, higher-quality healthcare in any setting.

Building Local Champions for Safer Patient Care

Created in 2018 through a gift from patient safety pioneer Dr Lucian Leape, this Fellowship equips one clinician or health system leader from a resource-limited setting with a fully funded master’s degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, 12 months of ISQua mentorship, 1 year access to ISQua’s Fellowship Programme, and global speaking opportunities. Dr Leape’s vision is to build local capacity where preventable harm is greatest, so every patient – no matter the country – receives care that is safe by design.

FAQs

If you’re thinking of applying or nominating someone, here are some helpful details.

How many Fellows are chosen each year?

Two. We invest deeply in two leaders for maximum on-the-ground impact.

Does the travel stipend cover visas and per diem?

It offsets major flight and hotel costs; visas and daily meals remain your responsibility.

Can I defer my award?

No. Funding is tied to the 24-month cycle – apply when you can fully commit.

Am I eligible if my country just moved to Upper-Middle-Income status?

Yes, if your application demonstrates resource constraints similar to LMIC settings.

May I choose a non-RCSI programme?

Yes, provided it’s quality-and-safety focused and does not exceed the tuition cap.

Is prior research experience required?

Helpful but not essential; we look for clear local impact and leadership potential.
