Our expert panel discussed preventive measures, including frequent hand washing, social distancing and the latest advice on wearing face masks and other measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19.
Dr Philip Crowley and Dr Jennifer Martin presented the situation from Ireland which was focused on active case finding, testing and contact tracing of all cases. Prof Trish Greenhalgh then provided an in-depth case study and analysis of both the literature and arguments surrounding the pros and cons of wearing facemasks. This was followed by a Q&A session.
About the Speakers
Dr Jennifer Martin
Jennifer is a Consultant in Public Health Medicine by profession, and leads the HSE National QI Team function on evidence for improvement in her normal life. Jennifer was redeployed to support the HSE response to COVID-19. Having initially worked in a regional Department of Public Health, Jennifer and Philip identified an ‘improvement opportunity’ whereby a large scale process could be established to provide a national response to results notification and contact management to manage the expected huge volumes in cases and contacts and thereby free up Departments of Public Health. The Chief Clinical Officer requested that a national approach to contact management be implemented and the contact management programme (CMP) was born. CMP is a collaboration across many HSE departments and supported by a range of public organisations.
