Celebrating Excellence in Research: The 2025 Reizenstein Award Featured

At ISQua’s 41st International Conference in São Paulo, the prestigious Reizenstein Award was presented on Monday, 13th October 2025 by Professor Sir Aziz Sheikh, Editor-in-Chief of ISQua’s International Journal for Quality in Health Care (IJQHC).

Presented annually in honour of Professor Peter Reizenstein, the founding Editor-in-Chief of IJQHC, the award recognises the best original research article published in the journal during the previous year. It celebrates excellence in research that advances quality and safety in healthcare—values at the very heart of both IJQHC and ISQua.

The 2025 Reizenstein Award was presented to the paper titled: “Co-design of an intervention to improve patient participation in discharge medication communication”
by Georgia Tobiano, Sharon Latimer, Elizabeth Manias, Andrea P. Marshall, Megan Rattray, Kim Jenkinson, Trudy Teasdale, Kellie Wren, and Wendy Chaboyer.

Published in IJQHC in March 2024, this paper represents a significant contribution to improving patient participation and communication at hospital discharge—a critical time for ensuring continuity of care and medication safety. The research team employed a co-design approach, working in partnership with patients and clinicians to develop an intervention that places patients at the centre of their care experience.

The award was accepted by the lead author, Dr Georgia Tobiano, who shared her reflections on receiving the honour:

“Our team is absolutely honoured to receive the Reizenstein Award. This recognition underscores the vital importance of co-design in research; no study intended to benefit patients and clinicians should be conducted without their voices at the centre. The idea for this research came directly from those experiencing the challenges, and they’ve been integral members of our team ever since. This is my third ISQua conference, and each time I attend, I’m inspired by the growing momentum around patient-centred care and co-design. I can’t wait to see where we go next.”

Dr Tobiano’s words capture the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and patient partnership that the Reizenstein Award seeks to recognise each year.
