We were delighted to welcome Dr Sara Albolino, Director at the Centre for patient safety of the Tuscany Region, and Chair of the WHO Collaborating Centre Collaborating Centre in Communication and Human Factor for Delivery of Safety and Quality Care, along with her colleagues.
The team presented on ‘Promoting patient safety at time of COVID-19: the contribution of regions through the Patient Safety WHO Collaborating Centre and the network of risk managers in Tuscany.’
The team discussed the safety culture for coping with an emergency situation through the introduction of some real life experiences from the field. The team covered risk managers, GPs and surgeons and how #COVID19 has affected them, their patients and their colleagues.

About the presenters
Sara Albolino, PHD EurErg CRM, is Director at the Centre for patient safety of the Tuscany Region where she has been working since 2004. She coordinates regional programs on risk management, training, patient safety practices, anticipation of risks. She is Chair of the WHO Collaborating Centre Collaborating Centre in Communication and Human Factor for Delivery of Safety and Quality Care.
Giulia Dagliana is Safety and Quality Manager at the Centre for Patient Safety Centre (Center GRC) of Tuscany Region (Italy) where she has been working since 2011. She is in charge of implementation-research projects in pediatric, maternal and neonatal care, and related training activities. She is the Coordinator of the WHO Collaborating Center in Human Factor and Ergonomics for the Delivery of Quality and Safety Care where she mainly coordinates projects for implementing patient safety intervention in low and middle income countries in the framework of the regional healthcare cooperation programs and in collaboration with international organizations and scientific societies such as WHO, IEA and ISQua.
Michela Tanzini works for the Center of Clinical Risk Management and Patient Safety of Tuscany Region – Collaborating Center of WHO in Human Factors and Communication for Safe Care since 2007. Her work focuses on: reporting and learning system, claims and litigations, human factors and communication for patient safety, medical device evaluations, organizational process analysis and re-design, and change management. Since 2015, she has collaborated with the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, producing observational projects in Tuscan hospitals and facilities regarding interruptions and multitasking.
Antonino Morabito MD, FRSCEngl, FRCSED, FICS, is Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Florence (Meyer Children’s Hospital). He worked as a Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon (January 2003 to April 2018) at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in the UK and Locum Consultant in Paediatric Surgery from 1st January to September 2003 at the Manchester Children’s Hospitals in the UK.
Dr. Stefano Spinelli, today a Coronafighter as an Emergency Medicine fellow at Pisa University Hospital. Emergency management passionate, in the past he worked with Italian Red Cross as coordinator. Always focussed on humanitarian criticalities, he has collaborated with several NGOs such MSF, PCRF and Rainbow for Africa. POCUS addicted, he’s now looking for a clinical link with ultrasound and COVID-19.
Marco de Luca has been working since 2001 as Paediatrician at the Emergency Department of Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence. He is a Paediatric Advance Life Support instructor since 2004. He is a Trainer of Trainers for GIC (Generic Instructors Course) for European Resuscitation Council (ERC) – Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC) since 2010. He is the director of the Simulation Program at Meyer Children Hospital since 2008. He is the Lead for the Organizational Structure “Simulation and Risk Management Meyer Children Hospital since 2015.
