The Student Health and Welfare Centres Organisation, SHAWCO

Thursday, 24th October 09:30- 11:00

University of Cape Town - SHAWCO

The Student Health and Welfare Centres Organisation, SHAWCO was founded in 1943 by a University of Cape Town medical student. The organisation was born out of the need to provide quality health care in underserviced areas in Cape Town, South Africa. Since then the organisation has grown to provide Educational services in addition to Health services. SHAWCO is student-run and student-led with SHAWCO Health running up to seven mobile-clinics a week.

Clinics are run by students under the supervision of qualified health professionals and provide a mutualistic environment where both student development and community upliftment are prioritised. Patients are given access to holistic primary health including rehabilitative therapy and limited medication which are all free to the patient. Join us for a presentation on the SHAWCO model, what makes it unique and why we believe it remains relevant today. This will take the form of an interactive seminar with a QnA session at the end.
